Stand on the beach at Bloubergstrand this week and you are standing between two very different seas. Ten days ago, the new moon of 14 June pulled some of the biggest tides of the year through Table Bay, because the moon happened to pass unusually close to Earth at the same time. Right now we are in the quiet middle of the cycle. By Monday, the full moon of 29 June will have wound the tides back up again, and with a proper winter swell running, the difference between high and low water becomes the single most useful thing to know before you leave the house. Here is how the whole machine works, in plain language.
The moon drags the Atlantic past this beach twice a day
Tides here are semi-diurnal: two high waters and two low waters roughly every 24 hours and 50 minutes. That extra 50 minutes exists because the moon is orbiting in the same direction Earth spins, so Earth has to turn a little further each day to bring Blouberg back under it, and every tide arrives about 50 minutes later than it did the day before. If low water suited your beach walk on Tuesday morning, by the weekend it will have drifted into the afternoon.
The moon’s gravity raises a bulge of ocean on the side of Earth facing it, and a matching bulge on the far side, where the water is effectively left behind as the planet is pulled moonward. Blouberg sweeps through both bulges daily, which is why you get two highs, not one, with successive highs and lows a touch over six hours apart.
Spring tides have nothing to do with the season
The name trips people up, especially in June. Spring tides happen twice a month, all year round, whenever the sun and moon line up: at new moon they pull from the same side, at full moon from opposite sides, and either way their tides stack. That is when Table Bay gets its biggest swing between high and low water, a range of around 1.8 metres at a strong spring. At the quarter moons the sun and moon pull at right angles and partly cancel each other, giving neap tides with a range that can shrink to about 0.6 metres. Same beach, three times the vertical movement, depending on nothing more than the shape of the moon.
Two wrinkles are worth knowing. First, the biggest tides lag the moon phase by a day or two, so the widest spring range usually lands shortly after new or full moon rather than on the night itself. Second, distance matters. The moon’s orbit is not a circle, and June 2026 made the point neatly: the 14 June new moon coincided almost exactly with perigee, the moon’s closest approach, which fattened those spring tides noticeably. The full moon coming on 29 June sits near the opposite extreme, about as far from Earth as it gets, so its springs will be real but gentler.
Low spring tide is when the rock pools appear
Between the rocky point at the northern end of Blouberg Beach and Small Bay lies Bokkombaai, a small shell-strewn pocket of coast where the best rock pools in the area live. On an ordinary mid-tide day much of it is under water and unremarkable. Around low water on a spring tide, the sea pulls right back and the rocks give up their pools, including larger ones calm enough for children to paddle in while the open sea does its winter thing beyond the rocks.
The window is shorter than people expect. Aim to arrive about an hour before the predicted low and give yourself an hour after it; beyond that the sea is visibly returning. Treat the incoming tide with respect here, because waves breaking over the outer rocks set up strong back-currents as they drain, and the pools that were placid at low water become channels on the push. Keep small explorers within reach and facing the sea. Winter has one genuine advantage for pool-goers: after a spell of calm between cold fronts the water in the pools is clear, and morning light on this west-facing shore is soft and low, with the sun barely climbing past the solstice angle this week.
High spring tide plus winter swell can take the whole beach
The other half of the spring cycle is more dramatic. From May to September, low-pressure systems tracking through the Southern Atlantic send long southwesterly groundswells straight at this coast, and winter delivers the biggest surf of the year here. Put a large swell on top of a spring high tide and the sea simply runs out of beach: the wet sand disappears, walkers get squeezed up into the soft stuff, and along the rockier stretches the waves reach the boulders themselves. These are spectacular hours for photographs of surf exploding in front of Table Mountain, and poor ones for a long walk.
Tide decides your route in a very literal way. The barefoot stretch between Small Bay and Big Bay only really works at low tide, when hard wet sand connects the two; at high water on a spring you are better off on the paved promenade between Table View and Bloubergstrand, which carries on with its ocean views regardless of what the sea is doing. Surfers and kiters feel the tide before anyone else
Blouberg’s waves break over sandbanks, and sandbanks care about depth. At low tide the banks sit shallower, so waves stand up steeper, break harder and sometimes close out; the push of an incoming mid tide often produces the most usable shape. At high spring tide the same swell can roll fatly over deep banks and barely break at all until it lurches up on the shorebreak. None of this is unique to Blouberg, but the 1.8-metre spring range is enough to turn one beach into three different surf spots across a single day, which is why local surfers check the tide graph before the swell chart.
Kiters have their own version of the problem. A spring high eats the launch area, leaving less dry sand for lines and landings, while a spring low opens up wide flats and exposes rocks that are invisible at other states of the tide. Reading a tide table takes less than a minute
You need exactly two things from a tide table: the times of high and low water, and the heights in metres. The heights are measured above chart datum, roughly the lowest level the sea reaches, so a 1.9-metre high is a big spring and a 1.2-metre high is nothing much. When the highs and lows for the day sit far apart in height, you are on springs; when they bunch together, neaps. The official South African tide predictions come from the Navy’s Hydrographic Office, and the same numbers flow through to the free tide sites and surf forecast apps most people actually use. Check them the night before rather than the week before, since the times move by that 50 minutes a day.
For the week ahead, the pattern is set: the range builds daily from today’s modest neaps toward the springs that follow the full moon on Monday 29 June. If there is a front and a big swell in the forecast around then, pick a spring high tide for storm-watching from the promenade with coffee in hand. And if a clear, still morning turns up in early July, the low waters a day or two after that full moon will be the ones that empty Bokkombaai properly. Set an alarm.
