The Best Breakfast in Table View and Blouberg, Ranked — Guides · Blouberg, Cape Town

Mid-May is when Blouberg’s breakfast culture shows its true shape. The tourists have thinned out, the first proper cold fronts are queuing up over the Atlantic, and the question is no longer “which terrace has the best view of Table Mountain” but “where can I get a decent plate of eggs without sitting in a draught”. This ranking reflects that. Sea views still count for something, but from now until spring, shelter, warmth and kitchens that take the meal seriously count for more.

Ground rules: everything here is in Table View, Bloubergstrand or Big Bay, all part of Cape Town’s West Coast strip. Prices and hours were correct as of May 2026, but this is a fast-changing stretch of coast, so check ahead before making a special trip. And yes, the order is an opinion. That is the point of a ranking.

1. Salt & Sage, Table View: the one to beat

Salt & Sage sits at Marine Circle on the Table View beachfront, and it is currently the most complete breakfast operation in the area. The menu runs from avo on toast at R65 through shakshouka at R100 and chorizo beans at R130 to a full English at R140, which is honest pricing for a beachfront address. The eggs Benedict has a genuine local following, and breakfast is served until 12:00, which still helps on a slow Sunday when 11:30 cut-offs elsewhere catch you out.

The room seats around 70 across indoor and outdoor sections, so when the northwester starts flinging rain at the windows you can still get a table with the sea in view and your back to the weather. Dogs are not merely tolerated, they get their own menu: a puppaccino is R18 and a chicken, rice and veggie bowl R60, which tells you exactly who this place is for. Faults? It is popular, and weekend mid-mornings get loud. Book or arrive before 09:30. Hours are 08:00-17:00 Mondays, 08:00-21:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and 09:00-17:00 Sundays.

2. Big Bay Café, Seaside Village: the locals’ default

Ask people who actually live in Big Bay where they eat breakfast and this is the most common answer. Big Bay Café sits inside the Seaside Village centre rather than on the sand, which costs it romance in summer and earns it back double in winter: no wind, no drama, just a warm room and a kitchen that has its cooked breakfast dialled in. The house breakfast is a proper spread of eggs, bacon, pork bangers, cherry tomatoes, baked beans and sautéed onions with a choice of chips or a potato rosti, and the rostis and lattes get singled out in reviews for good reason.

It is also the sensible refuel after a surf. Big Bay’s beginner-friendly waves are a short walk away (see surfing Big Bay as a beginner), and a post-session plate here beats shivering over a takeaway coffee in the car park. The décor is somewhere between Karoo farmhouse and city café, which sounds odd and works. Weakness: it closes late afternoon and the space is compact, so a big group on a rainy Saturday can swamp it.

3. The Surf Café, Bloubergrant: best coffee, earliest doors

The Surf Café at 2 Coral Road is the smallest operation on this list and the one with the clearest identity. It opens at 07:00 every day, the earliest reliable start in the area, serves Tribe coffee with oat, almond and soy alternatives, and attaches a little surf shop to the side in case you forgot who you are dealing with. The food is light: breakfasts, toasties, poke bowls, and a strong line in vegan baking that is worth ordering even if you are not vegan. Dogs are welcome.

The honest caveat is that this is not the place for a big cooked breakfast, and it closes at 14:00, so it is a morning creature. Come for the flat white and the chat, not the fry-up. As a weekday first stop before work it might actually be number one; as an all-purpose breakfast venue it sits third.

4. Ons Huisie, Bloubergstrand: the winter charmer with slow service

Ons Huisie is an early-1900s fisherman’s cottage turned heritage-site restaurant on Stadler Road, and in late autumn it is the most atmospheric breakfast in Blouberg, full stop. Whitewashed walls, 130 years of history in the photographs, Robben Island out front. Breakfast runs 09:00-12:00 and leans traditional, from simple bacon and eggs to a Farmer’s Choice with rump steak, boerewors, baked beans and chips. There is a large children’s playground, dogs are welcome on a leash, and parking is straightforward, which makes this the strongest pram-and-hound choice on the list.

So why fourth? Service. Reviewers praise the food and the staff’s friendliness in the same breath as they mention the wait, and busy periods stretch it further. The 12:00 breakfast cut-off is also tight for a lazy Sunday. Go on a weekday morning when it is quiet, order the works, and let the old cottage do its thing.

5. Bootlegger Blouberg, Athens Road: the laptop office

Bootlegger is a Cape Town chain with more than 80 stores, and the Blouberg branch at 1 Athens Road does exactly what the brand promises: all-day breakfast, dependable coffee, free wifi, a kids’ menu, and staff who do not blink when you open a laptop at 09:00 and leave at noon. Eggs Benedict and avo toast are the staples, and most people get out for R100-150 a head. In winter, when Blouberg fills up with remote workers on long lets chasing off-season rates (we unpacked how those deals work in our guide to monthly rentals in Blouberg), this is where half of them end up working.

The criticism writes itself: it is a chain, the menu is identical to every other Bootlegger, and nothing on the plate will surprise you. But consistency is a feature when it is 9°C outside and you need wifi and a warm seat for three hours.

6. Reach Café, Table View: the quiet weekday sleeper

Reach Café at 83 Janssens Avenue is attached to a church, sits well away from the beachfront, and is all the better for both. All-day breakfasts, quiches, croissants and proper cakes, a shaded garden, and a playground with a jungle gym, swings and a sandpit that makes it a favourite with parents of small children. It is calm in a way the beachfront spots never manage.

The hours are the catch, and they are a real catch: closed on Saturdays, kitchen closed on Mondays, otherwise roughly 08:30-17:00 Tuesday to Friday and 08:30-14:00 on Sundays. As a weekend brunch venue it barely exists. As a Tuesday-morning escape with a toddler, it is quietly excellent.

7. Doodles Beachfront: cheap eggs, tight window

Doodles at 110 Beach Boulevard is really a lunch, sports and sundowner venue that happens to serve breakfast, and it shows. The window is short (09:00-11:30 daily) and the menu is basic. But the pricing is the best on the beachfront: scrambled eggs on toast at R59, and the Doodles Breakfast of two fried eggs, bacon, a pork sausage, chips and toast at R109. The big room takes the panorama seriously, and on a clear autumn morning after a front has passed, the light across the bay is worth the visit alone. Just do not arrive at 11:45 expecting eggs, and do not expect café-grade coffee. Near misses and practical notes

On the Rocks at 45 Stadler Road opens at 09:00 and does a simple, well-priced breakfast about as close to the water as you can legally sit, but it is first a seafood restaurant and the morning menu is an afterthought. Eden Café at Eden on the Bay is a fair fallback in Big Bay when the café next door is full. Mugg & Bean at Bayside Mall is the wet-weather insurance policy: mall parking, big portions, no surprises.

Three timing notes for the season. First, parking on the beachfront strips fills fast on sunny winter Sundays because every Capetonian has the same idea between fronts; the shopping-centre venues (Big Bay Café, Mugg & Bean) sidestep this entirely. Second, breakfast cut-offs bite harder in winter when nobody wants to leave the house early: Doodles stops at 11:30, Ons Huisie and Salt & Sage both stop at 12:00, and Bootlegger runs all day. Third, if the forecast shows a front arriving mid-morning, order early and sit inside. The first rain of a Blouberg cold front does not announce itself politely, and the difference between a good breakfast and a soggy one is usually ten minutes and one better table.
