Two questions decide whether a sundowner on this coastline is glorious or grim, and neither of them is “how’s the wine list?” First: how squarely does the venue face Table Mountain? Second: what happens to your table when the southeaster arrives? Everything else — the food, the crowd, the price of a gin — is detail. So this ranking scores exactly those two things, out of ten each, and says plainly where each place falls short. A timing note, because it matters: September is quietly the best sundowner month of the year here. The sun sets around half past six, the summer wind machine hasn’t switched on properly yet, and southern right whales are still working the bay. From October the southeaster starts running multi-day shifts and the shelter scores below stop being theoretical. Anything much over 20 knots from the south-east and you should be choosing from the sheltered half of this list.

All ten venues were confirmed trading as of early September 2026. Prices are ranges, not gospel; treat every rand figure here as “roughly, check ahead”.

10. Cubana Tableview

View 6, shelter 5. Cubana sits on the beachfront and the mountain is right there, but this is a late-night lounge wearing a sundowner costume. Rum cocktails run somewhere in the R80–R130 band, and the music climbs as the night does. Arrive at six and you’re early for the actual show.

9. Saints Burger Joint, Big Bay

View 6, shelter 4. From Eden on the Bay the geometry changes: Table Mountain sits further off to your left and Robben Island takes centre stage. That’s a different postcard, not a worse one, and Saints does its job well: proper beef burgers mostly in the R100–R170 range, one of the longer craft beer lists on this coast, live music on some nights. The problem is the precinct itself. When the southeaster runs, the gaps between those white apartment blocks concentrate the wind, and an outside table goes from pleasant to punishing in the space of one drink. On a still spring evening, though, this place climbs three spots. Order the beer you haven’t heard of.

8. Pakalolo

View 7, shelter 3. A Caribbean-style bar on Beach Boulevard with bamboo on the walls, Mexican food on the menu and some of the friendliest drink prices on the strip (a margarita here costs less than the parking does in Camps Bay). It is completely exposed when the wind blows, and slightly scruffy always. The scruffiness is the charm. The wind isn’t.

7. Doodles Beachfront

View 7, shelter 6. Doodles is the strip’s crowd-pleaser: big, busy, family-heavy early, with a wide panorama across the bay and a menu long enough that nobody in your group can complain. Indoors you’re fine in almost any weather. What you trade away is intimacy. This is a sundowner surrounded by birthday tables and toddlers, at cheerful pub prices. Sometimes that’s exactly right. Sometimes it’s why you keep reading this list.

6. Catch 22 Beachside Grille & Bar

View 8, shelter 5. The honest all-rounder of Table View. Catch 22 faces the mountain properly, and it’s one of the few places on this list where the food deserves equal billing with the view: seafood, steaks and sushi, with mains broadly in the R150–R280 range as of September 2026. The al fresco tables are the ones you want, and they’re the ones the southeaster wants too. When it’s pumping, you’ll be eating indoors and the score drops a notch. The move: calamari, a cold Sauvignon Blanc, and a table booked for 5.30pm rather than 7pm, because the light show is the starter.

5. Blowfish, Dolphin Beach Hotel

View 8, shelter 8. Down at the southern end of the strip the mountain sits almost dead ahead, and Blowfish, trading inside the Dolphin Beach Hotel since 2001, points straight at it. This is the polished option: sushi, fresh seafood, a serious wine list, hotel service, hotel-ish prices to match. Because you’re indoors with the beach immediately below, a howling southeaster becomes something you watch rather than wear, which on a bad-wind day makes this the best seat in Table View. It loses points only for atmosphere: it’s a restaurant that does sundowners, not a sundowner institution.

4. Ons Huisie

View 6, shelter 7. The heritage-site cottage at the corner of Stadler and Generaal Jansens roads is the oldest thing on this list by a distance, and the most relaxed. You sit outside with a bottle of local wine and traditional West Coast food, dogs welcome, kids loose, nobody hurrying you. Be honest about the view, though: from this northern end of Bloubergstrand the mountain slides away to your left and Robben Island does most of the work, so if the classic postcard angle is the point of your evening, this isn’t your first stop. The outside area takes the edge off the wind rather than deleting it. What Ons Huisie offers instead is the thing the flashier venues can’t buy: the sense that people have been doing exactly this, on exactly this spot, for a very long time. Some evenings that beats the geometry.

3. Pebbles Gin & Cocktail Lounge

View 8, shelter 10. The lounge at the Blaauwberg Beach Hotel, right on the Bloubergstrand beachfront, is the wind-proof pick: floor-to-ceiling glass, the bay spread out in front of you, and not one napkin taking flight. The gin list is the deepest in the area, with cocktails generally in the R90–R150 range, and you’re paying partly for the glass. Two caveats. It fills fast on weekend evenings, and it runs karaoke and DJ nights, so check their socials if you’re after quiet. When the southeaster is doing 25 knots and you still want a sunset, this is the answer.

2. On the Rocks

View 9, shelter 9. Fifty-plus years on Stadler Road, right at the water’s edge, with waves breaking close enough to earn the name and a clean panorama across Table Bay to the mountain and Robben Island. Behind glass, the southeaster is scenery. The food is old-school and the pricing sits at the top end of this list, which is also the reason it’s not number one: On the Rocks makes a sundowner feel like an occasion (anniversary territory, the place people book for the proposal), when the best sundowners on this coast are a habit, not an event. If someone’s flying in and you get one evening to show off where you live, skip the deliberation and book here.

1. The Blue Peter

View 10, shelter 2. Yes, shelter two — and it still wins, because this ranking rewards the ceiling, not the average, and on a still evening nothing in Cape Town touches the Blue Peter’s lawn. The ritual has been running for decades: pizza and a cold beer on the grass off Popham Street, the whole bay laid out below, Table Mountain arranged across the water almost exactly as it appears on the postcards. The exact spot photographers use is a short walk down the beach. Prices are ordinary-restaurant, not view-tax. The honest warnings: lawn space is first-come on good evenings, so arrive by five in high season, and when the southeaster is properly up the lawn is unusable and you should be at Pebbles or Blowfish instead. But this is September. The evenings are still, the whales are in the bay, and the best sundowner spot in Blouberg is the one it has always been. Some rankings are close. This one isn’t.
