Cape Town’s standard visitor advice (hire a car or stay near the City Bowl) falls apart at Bloubergstrand, because the bus link up the West Coast is one of the best in the city. A dedicated busway runs from the Civic Centre through Milnerton to Table View, buses use it all day, and a feeder route carries on to Big Bay. The problem is that almost nobody publishes the working route numbers, and half the travel guides still quote fares from routes that stopped existing years ago. So here they are, checked against the current MyCiTi timetables in September 2026.
The connection that works: T01, then the 216
The trunk route you want is the T01 (Dunoon – Table View – Civic Centre – Waterfront). It starts at the V&A Waterfront, calls at Civic Centre station on Hertzog Boulevard, then runs up its own red busway past Paarden Eiland, Lagoon Beach, Milnerton and Sunset Beach to Table View station at Bayside on Blaauwberg Road. The timetable puts Civic Centre to Table View at about 35 minutes, and because the bus has its own lane for most of the run, that figure holds up in traffic that would have a car crawling on the R27.
From Table View station you have two options. For the kitesurfing end of the beachfront, get off here and walk down Blaauwberg Road to the sea, 15 to 20 minutes and flat the whole way. For Big Bay, stay on three more stops to Wood station and change to the 216 feeder, which winds through Parklands (stops include Parklands College, Cormorant, Seaside Village and Marine) and terminates at Big Bay 25 minutes after leaving Wood, within walking distance of the beach. Your myconnect card treats the change as one journey: tap out at Wood, tap in again within 45 minutes, and you pay a single distance-based fare for the whole trip.
The 216’s frequency is the detail that decides everything. On weekdays it runs every 10 minutes through the morning and afternoon, easing to every 20 minutes in the middle of the day, still frequent enough to be properly spontaneous. Saturdays it runs every 20 minutes all day, which is workable. Sundays and public holidays it runs every 50 minutes, and that changes the calculation completely (more on that below). First weekday bus out of Big Bay is 05:20; the last leaves at 20:10.
| Route | Where it takes you | Journey time | myconnect fare (saver / peak) |
|---|---|---|---|
| T01 | Waterfront / Civic Centre – Milnerton – Sunset Beach – Table View station | ±35 min from Civic Centre | R25.50 / R32.50 |
| T01 + 216 (change at Wood) | Civic Centre – Wood – Parklands – Big Bay | ±75 min including the transfer | R29.50 / R34.50, one fare for both legs |
| 216 on its own | Wood station – Parklands – Big Bay | 25 min | from R15.00, distance-based |
| 214b / 214c | Table View – Melkbosstrand / Duynefontein | varies — check the timetable | distance-based |
Fares above reflect the 1 July 2026 adjustment and assume the likely distance band for each trip; MyCiTi’s online fare calculator will give you the exact figure for your stops. Two local circulars, the 213 and 223, loop between Sunningdale, Parklands and the coastal suburbs; their Popham, Marine Circle, West Beach and Blouberg Sands stops are the closest the network gets to the beachfront south of Big Bay. Our full area guide covers which neighbourhood is which.
What it costs, and the peak-fare trap
MyCiTi is cashless. You need a myconnect card, which costs R40 from station kiosks and participating retailers as of 2026, and you load travel value onto it before boarding. Peak pricing applies only to journeys that start on a weekday between 06:45–08:00 or 16:15–17:30; every other time, including all day on weekends and public holidays, gets the cheaper saver rate. A weekend return from town to Big Bay therefore lands between roughly R51 and R59 for the round trip, depending on where you tap out.
Skip the R130 one-day pass unless you’re stringing together at least five separate journeys; a beach return doesn’t come close to justifying it. The trap worth knowing: because fares are priced on tap-in time, heading home between 16:15 and 17:30 on a weekday costs you peak rates for the entire journey. Leave the beach at 16:00, or hold out past 17:30, and pocket the difference.
Uber and Bolt: real ranges by time of day
The apps quote live, so treat these as planning ranges rather than gospel. As of September 2026, a standard UberX or Bolt from the City Bowl to Bloubergstrand, a run of around 18 to 20 km and 20 to 30 minutes via the R27 or Koeberg Road, generally lands between R180 and R280 outside busy periods, with Bolt often quoting a little under Uber on the same route. A weekday mid-morning is the sweet spot: low demand, clear roads, bottom of the range.
Friday and Saturday evenings are another story. Surge around dinner time can push the same trip well past R350, and getting a car out of Big Bay late at night is the genuine weak point — drivers are thin on the ground this far up the coast after 22:00, so budget extra money and extra waiting. Sunday late afternoons surge too, when the whole beach crowd heads home inside the same hour. Travelling as a three or four? Do the sums honestly: two return trips at evening rates gets close to what a small rental costs for the day, with none of the flexibility.
When car-free is a mistake
The honest answer is that the bus suits one specific kind of day: a weekday or Saturday outing to Big Bay or the Table View beachfront, travelling light, back before dark. For that trip it’s cheap, frequent and quicker than most visitors expect. Outside that envelope, problems stack up fast.
- Sundays. A 50-minute gap between 216 buses turns one missed departure into an afternoon-defining event. If Sunday is your only free day, ride the T01 to Table View station and walk to the beach, or just book a car.
- Sundowners and dinner. In mid-September the sun sets around 18:40 and the last 216 leaves Big Bay after 20:00, so a Saturday sundowner is doable right now. By December, sunset creeps towards 20:00 and you’d be sprinting for the final bus. If the evening is the whole point, see our ranked beachfront sundowner spots, then plan on ride-hailing home and accept the surge.
- Kitesurfing kit. A board bag and a 12 m kite on a commuter bus is technically possible and practically miserable. Nobody does it twice.
- Melkbosstrand and beyond. The 214b and 214c feeders do reach Melkbosstrand from Table View, but frequencies are thin and from town it’s two buses plus the transfer wait. Flower-season outings further up the West Coast (very much on this month) are car territory, full stop.
One variable no timetable fixes: wind. Early spring is when the southeaster starts flexing, and a strong afternoon blow turns the walk from Table View station into sandblasting. Check the live wind on our beachfront weather station before committing a beach day, and go in the morning if the forecast looks marginal. Calm September days have a bonus, too: southern right whales move along this coast through early spring, and shore sightings do happen.
Quick answers
Is there a bus stop on the Bloubergstrand beachfront itself?
Closer than you might expect. No route drives the beachfront road itself, but the 213 and 223 circulars stop at Popham and Marine Circle, a few minutes’ walk from the Table View promenade, and the same loops serve West Beach and Blouberg Sands behind the beach further north. At the Big Bay end, the 216’s final stops (Seaside Village and Marine) put you more or less at Eden on the Bay. Budget a short walk to the sand from any of them, not a hike.
Can I pay cash on a MyCiTi bus?
No — the system is card-only, and the old single-trip option is long gone. Buy a myconnect card (R40) at the Civic Centre station kiosk before you board and load enough value for the return so you’re not hunting for a top-up point in Table View.
How late do buses run back to Cape Town?
The last 216 leaves Big Bay at 20:10 on weekdays and around 20:20 on weekends, while the T01 trunk keeps running a while longer: the last bus towards town leaves Table View just after 21:00 on weekdays and around 21:40 on weekends. Miss the feeder and a short Uber hop to Table View station can still connect you to a cheap ride to town. Confirm the day’s last departure on MyCiTi’s stop timetables; the schedule does shift.
