What’s On in Blouberg & Table View: Month-by-Month Guide

Runners on the beach at Big Bay, Bloubergstrand, with Table Mountain across the water

Cape Town’s what’s-on listings have a blind spot, and it sits squarely between the Diep River and Melkbosstrand. The big event guides cover the City Bowl, the Winelands and the southern beaches, then wave a hand at everything north of Paarden Eiland. Yet this coast has a calendar of its own: two parkruns, a monthly food fair in a Melkbosstrand barn, a marathon that starts at Eden on the Bay, midweek drag racing under lights, and the world’s most famous big-air kiteboarding contest, which happens on our sand and nobody else’s.

This guide is the fixed reference: the recurring fixtures first, then the year month by month, written from the start of the July 2026 school holidays. Dates for one-off events shift annually, so treat organiser pages as the final word and this page as the map.

What’s on right now: winter, July 2026

Mid-winter is quieter, not dead. The short version for the school holidays:

  • Whale season is open. Southern right whales work this coastline from roughly June to November, and you can spot them from the shore at Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand on calm days. Binoculars from a beachfront bench cost nothing. Humpbacks pass through on migration too, typically early and late in the season.
  • The parkruns don’t stop. Big Bay and Melkbosstrand both run every Saturday at 08:00, rain or shine. Winter fields are smaller and the light over the bay is often better than in summer.
  • Markets with a roof. The Melkbosch Food Fair trades from an old barn on the first Saturday of the month (09:00-15:00), and the Schoolyard Market at Elkanah House in Sunningdale runs on the last Saturday morning of the month, with a log fire going when it rains.
  • Racing under lights. Killarney International Raceway on Potsdam Road hosts Robot Racing on two Wednesday nights a month, 18:00-22:00: street-legal cars drag racing off a traffic light, with spectators welcome.
  • Big seas. Winter swells rearrange the beach and the rock pools. If you’re timing a beach walk around a cold front, the spring tide cycle matters more than the rain; our Blouberg tide guide covers how to read it.

The fixtures that run every week

Learn these six and you always have a default plan:

  • Big Bay parkrun: Saturdays, 08:00. Free, timed 5km, an out-and-back along the beachfront starting at Eden on the Bay. Register once online, bring your barcode.
  • Melkbosstrand parkrun: Saturdays, 08:00. The village alternative, and a good excuse to make a morning of it; see our Melkbosstrand guide for what to do afterwards.
  • myrun Blouberg: Sundays. A timed 2.5km or 5km with a flexible start: collect a timing band from 07:00 and set off any time before 08:15.
  • Milnerton Flea Market: Saturdays 08:00-14:00 and Sundays 08:00-15:00 on Marine Drive (R27), plus most public holidays. Around 250 stalls of antiques, vinyl, tools, books and genuine junk, with Table Mountain across the lagoon mouth. It’s weather-dependent, so skip it in a proper cold front.
  • Killarney race days: the Power Series rounds fall on selected Saturdays through the year, with everything from classic machinery to modern sports cars and motorcycles, and Robot Racing fills two Wednesday nights a month.
  • Clean C beach cleanups: first and second Saturday of the month from 09:00, about two hours on the Blouberg sand. Pitch up; gear is organised.

Month by month through the year

July

School holidays, whale season, covered markets. The Melkbosch Food Fair lands on 4 July this year and the Schoolyard Market on 25 July. Between fronts you get those still, glassy winter days that locals quietly rate as the best beach-walking weather of the year. Restaurants along Stadler Road and the Big Bay strip run winter specials; ask, because few advertise them well.

August

Flower season starts up the R27. The West Coast’s spring bloom generally runs August into September, and the road north from Table View is the front door to it, which makes this the month the R27 earns its “flower route” traffic. Closer to home, whales are still about and the parkrun fields start growing again as marathon training blocks begin.

September

Spring proper. Darling, an easy day trip inland off the R27, celebrates its wildflowers with a long-running September show, and the veld around the West Coast is at its best early in the month. Back on the coast, the first serious south-easters of the season arrive, which means the kiters start watching the forecast obsessively.

October

The biggest local race of the year: the Intercare Blouberg Marathon, hosted by West Coast Athletic Club, is set for 3-4 October 2026, starting at Eden on the Bay in Bloubergstrand. The 42.2km goes off at 05:30 on the Saturday and doubles as a Comrades and Two Oceans qualifier; there are also 21.1km, 10km and 5km options, so the whole weekend has a race-village feel. If you live near the beachfront, expect road closures early on race morning. October is also when kite season opens in earnest along Table View’s beaches.

November

The loud month. In recent editions the Red Bull King of the Air, the invitation-only big-air kiteboarding final held off Kite Beach between Table View and Bloubergstrand, has run inside a waiting window from late November into early December, with organisers calling the contest on the best wind day. Confirm the 2026 window on Red Bull’s event page before planning around it; when it’s on, the beach fills fast and parking anywhere near Kite Beach becomes a contact sport. Clean C’s “Most Beautiful Beach Run in the World”, a casual out-and-back on the Blouberg sand, has typically run in the second half of November. And spring is when government gazettes the recreational West Coast rock lobster season; if you’re planning to dive over summer, read our guide to crayfish season dates and permits before buying anything.

December

Peak season. The weekly fixtures all keep running, the Milnerton Flea Market adds public-holiday trading (it closes only for Christmas Day and Good Friday), and every beachfront restaurant table from Blouberg to Big Bay books out for New Year’s Eve weeks ahead. There is no official fireworks display on these beaches; the local New Year happens at restaurant dinners and braais, and on the sand at midnight. If a south-easter is blowing, and in December it usually is, plan around morning beach time and afternoon shelter.

January to March

High summer is less about ticketed events and more about conditions: the wind machine runs, Kite Beach and Dolphin Beach host a floating city of kites most afternoons, and the markets and parkruns carry the weekly rhythm. Killarney’s Power Series rounds resume through the summer and autumn on selected Saturdays. February and March bring the year’s warmest sea and the calmer mornings photographers wait for.

April to June

The one to watch is the Freedom Swim: the roughly 7.5km crossing from Robben Island to Big Bay, held around Freedom Day (27 April) in most years. Water temperatures sit near 13°C, which is why it’s rated among the toughest open-water events anywhere, and Big Bay is the finish line, making it one of the best free spectator mornings on this coast. Confirm each year’s staging with the organisers. May and June wind down into autumn: the wind drops, the first fronts arrive, humpbacks begin moving through, and the calendar resets to whale season.

How to confirm dates before you drive

A few habits save wasted trips:

  • Ticketed events (Killarney rounds, the marathon, beach runs) list on Webtickets, Quicket or Entry Ninja; the listing date beats anything a poster or a shared Facebook post says.
  • Wind and weather move things. The Milnerton Flea Market thins out in bad weather, King of the Air exists only when the wind cooperates, and summer south-easters can shift outdoor events at short notice. Check the morning of.
  • Monthly markets shift for holidays. First-Saturday and last-Saturday fixtures occasionally move when they collide with Easter or the festive season, and the Schoolyard Market usually skips school holidays; the organisers’ Facebook pages are usually updated, their websites less so.
  • The Cape Town International Kite Festival, which spent years flying at Melkbosstrand, has moved venues in recent editions; check Cape Mental Health’s event pages rather than assuming it’s back on the West Coast.

Details above are correct as of July 2026. Fixtures this reliable rarely vanish, but times and entry fees do creep, so when a specific Saturday matters, spend the thirty seconds on the organiser’s page first.
