King of the Air Big Bay: A 2026 Spectator’s Guide

A kiteboarder launches a big air jump above spectators lining the beach at Big Bay during Red Bull King of the Air

Red Bull King of the Air doesn’t have a single fixed date. For 2026, the event’s wind window runs from 21 November to 6 December, and organisers will call the actual competition day once Cape Town’s wind and swell line up. The action happens at Kite Beach in Big Bay, Blouberg, and it’s free to watch from the beach.

What Is Red Bull King of the Air?

King of the Air is the biggest title in big air kiteboarding: eighteen of the world’s best riders, plus a women’s division added in 2024, launch off Big Bay’s swell and get judged on height, trick variety, technical difficulty and style. It started in 2000 at Ho’okipa Beach in Maui, went on hiatus, and was revived in Cape Town in 2013. The 2025 edition was the 13th staged in South Africa, which makes 2026 the 14th.

The event’s early Cape Town years were based at Eden on the Bay, before it moved a short distance north to Kite Beach from 2018, chasing the cleaner wind and bigger swell that stretch of coast offers.

When Is King of the Air 2026? How the Wind Window Works

Rather than book a stadium and a date, Red Bull books a fortnight and waits for the Cape Doctor to deliver. The Cape Doctor is the strong southeaster that defines Cape Town summers, and Big Bay is one of the few places in the world it hits at the right angle for big air jumps.

Organisers watch the forecast throughout the window and typically give around 48 hours’ notice once conditions look right: an average of at least 25 knots, with a forecast building to 35 knots or more, alongside the right swell. That’s why you can’t plan a King of the Air trip around one calendar date. You book the window and stay flexible for the call.

The window shifts a little from year to year, but always lands in late November and early December:

Year Wind window
2021 18 November – 3 December
2024 23 November – 8 December
2025 22 November – 7 December
2026 21 November – 6 December

If you want to track how the wind is actually building day to day, Bloubergstrand’s live weather station shows real-time speed and direction along the same stretch of coast as Big Bay, useful for judging whether a call is likely before Red Bull makes it official.

Where to Watch: Best Spectator Spots at Big Bay

Kite Beach is a wide stretch of white sand and dune, and most of the crowd spreads along the high-water mark and up onto the dune edge for a raised view of the jumps. The best sightlines are directly in front of the main compound, where the judges and big screen are set up, but the beach is long enough that walking further along still gets you a clear view with more breathing room.

Past editions have drawn crowds estimated at over 7,000 people per day, so if the call goes out for a weekend, expect the beach to fill up fast.

  • Cost: Free to watch, no ticket required (as of 2026-09-18; check Red Bull’s event page for any hospitality add-ons)
  • Where: Kite Beach, Big Bay, Blouberg, Cape Town, the open beach north of Eden on the Bay
  • Timing on the day: Heats generally run through the afternoon once wind builds; confirm the day’s schedule on Red Bull’s event page before setting off
  • Parking: Public parking along Otto du Plessis Drive at Big Bay fills fast once a contest day is confirmed
  • Without a car: MyCiTi bus to Table View or Big Bay, then a short walk to the beach
  • Wind exposure: Fully open to the southeaster, no shelter from sand or spray
  • Kids and dogs: Open beach works for both, but keep a close eye near the water’s edge with kite lines and crowds around

Getting There: Parking, MyCiTi and Timing Tips

Big Bay sits roughly 25 to 30 minutes from central Cape Town via the R27 and Marine Drive. If you’re staying anywhere in Blouberg, Table View or Melkbosstrand, it’s a short drive or even a walk along the beachfront promenade.

Once a contest day is called, expect real congestion on the roads into Big Bay and a full car park within an hour or two. Arriving well before midday, ahead of when the heats typically pick up, is the difference between parking on tar and parking three blocks back on a verge. If you’re relying on public transport, our guide to getting to Bloubergstrand without a car covers MyCiTi routes and Uber pricing that apply just as well on a King of the Air day.

Because the call can come with only two days’ notice, plan your accommodation and transport around the whole window rather than a specific date, especially if you’re travelling from outside Cape Town.

What Happens on Competition Day

Eighteen riders in the Open Division and six in the Women’s Division work through knockout heats, each judged on the height and extremity of their jumps, trick variety, technical difficulty, style and overall impression. A rider’s best three tricks, combined with an overall impression score, decide who advances.

Beyond the kiting, expect a festival atmosphere on the sand: live music, food stalls and beach activities running alongside the competition, with a big screen relaying replays and scores to the crowd. It’s as much a spring and early-summer social occasion for Cape Town as it is a sporting event, so budget time to enjoy the beach and not just the heats.

Past Editions: Highlights and Winners

King of the Air has been decided in Cape Town every year since 2013. COVID-19 pushed the event’s slot from its original January/February date to the November/December window used ever since, which is why the 2026 edition falls in spring rather than midsummer.

Year Open Division winner Women’s Division winner
2020 Jesse Richman Not held
2021 Marc Jacobs Not held
2023 Andrea Principi Not held
2024 Andrea Principi Francesca Maini
2025 Lorenzo Casati Nathalie Lambrecht

Andrea Principi’s back-to-back Open Division titles in 2023 and 2024 make him one of the standout names of the Cape Town era, and the Women’s Division, introduced in 2024, has quickly become just as competitive a watch.
